Get guests onto WiFi with just the camera
You do not need any app to make a WiFi code or, on most phones, to scan one. Point an iPhone's camera at it and a banner offers to join the network; the same holds on Android 10 and newer. The password travels inside the pattern, so nobody reads it off a sticky note or hears it dictated aloud.
The wrinkle is what 'native' means for WiFi. Joining a network is a system action, so the phone shows a 'Join Wi-Fi?' prompt rather than connecting silently. That prompt means it worked without an app — raw text starting with WIFI: means the scanner is too old for the format.
Which phones join with no app at all
Reach for the plain camera first. On iPhones running iOS 11 or later — anything from roughly 2017 on — the Camera app recognises the WiFi format and pops a join prompt with no download. If your password contains a semicolon, colon or backslash, those are structural characters in the WiFi format and must be escaped; the generator handles standard passwords, so plain letters and numbers are safest for a sticker guests will scan unattended.
Make a scan-to-join code
- Type the SSID exactly. Match capitalisation and spacing precisely — 'Cafe WiFi' and 'cafe wifi' are different networks and the join will fail silently.
- Enter the password. Leave the password blank only if you set encryption to nopass, otherwise the phone will prompt for a key it should already have.
- Pick the encryption. Select WPA for a standard router. The most common mistake is leaving it on the wrong option for an open network.
- Test before printing. Scan with a plain iPhone camera to confirm the join prompt appears with no app open.
